For the 10th release from Garden Portal, I, Michael Potter, your friendly label operator, have decided to finally release some music from myself and my scruffy band of cohorts. While I have been using The Electric Nature moniker to release my solo music on and off since the mid/late 2000s, for the past half-decade it has gelled into a tight-knit improvisational entity comprised of myself, Michael Pierce (Wet Garden, Leisure Service), and Thom Strickland (Smokedog, Bleachy Asshole), all of us multi-instrumentalists and often switching position or experimenting with new strategies entirely. A lot of the time we are a "rock-style" band with drums and blasted-out guitars and bass. Sometimes we're more of an electronic drone/noise hybrid. Sometimes we're three guys with amped-up and effected acoustic guitars making "Ambient Primitive" music, and that's the group you're getting here.
This is The Electric Nature at our decidedly most ambient, but there is no shortage of noise in the mix; it just might not be quite as in your face as per usual. I've been playing semi-improvisational amplified acoustic solo sets for the past year or two that have been sort of leading up to this culmination. With Pierce and Strickland in the mix, it fulfills the promise of what I had been trying to work out on my own. There's a kind of hard to define integration of sounds and ideas in this 75-minute slab of sonic goop that ranges from American Primitive-ish guitar, early Minimalist, Theatre of Eternal Music-style never-ending ur-drone, the New Zealand tradition of prolonged sturm und drang perfected by The Dead C, and modern ambient electronic synthesis and processing, all wrapped in a blanket of bluesy Cosmic Americana. We like to think of this music as the sound of the living Earth inside the Cosmos, always playing, always humming along, and we get the pleasure of tuning in and playing along with it sometimes. We really enjoy making this music and hope you find some enjoyment in it as well. Best experienced through headphones in a dark room with your libation of choice.
While we are keeping most of our digital content on a pay-what-you-want basis, 100% of digital proceeds from this and all other Garden Portal albums will be donated to Mutual Aid Athens for the foreseeable future. Mutual Aid Athens is an awesome network of folks that are daily helping out people and families here in my community of Athens, GA that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have the funds to spare, I encourage you to make a donation on your own through Venmo @MutualAidAthens or Cash App $MutualAidAthens. 🖤
